Minutes after Kamala Harris stepped off the stage following the U.S. presidential debate, Taylor Swift took to Instagram to officially endorse the Vice President for the 2024 presidential election.
In her post dated September 10, 2024, Swift made her position clear, writing, “I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election.”
Swift emphasized her support for the Harris-Walz ticket, citing their alignment with causes she cares about. She encouraged her followers to make informed decisions, stating, “I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make.”
Swift also addressed recent AI-generated images that falsely depicted her supporting Trump, explaining, “It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.” The post quickly garnered millions of likes and sparked widespread discussion.
Swift humorously signed off by embracing a label from Trump’s running mate, J.D. Vance, who referred to Democrats as “childless cat ladies.” In response, Swift called herself a “Childless Cat Lady” and posted a photo of herself posing with her cat.
Elon Musk was quick to react to Swift’s endorsement, taking to X on September 11, 2024, to post a controversial tweet: “Fine Taylor … you win … I will give you a child and guard your cats with my life.”
Musk’s tweet immediately ignited a storm of responses from social media users, with some expressing discomfort and others ridiculing the comment.
One user remarked, “Am I reading this right that you are offering to have a child with Taylor Swift?” while another added, “wtf??? Why are you all so damn weird.” One user sarcastically commented, “So this is what ick looks like.”
Others took aim at Musk’s personal life, with one user quipping, “Sir, you have reached unseen levels of divorced. No one has ever been more divorced than you in this moment.” While many reactions focused on Musk’s comment, some users questioned Swift’s political influence, with one person stating, “Nobody, and I mean nobody is changing their vote based off of what Taylor Swift says. Nobody cares.”
However, Swift’s post continued to spread, with her fans defending her endorsement and the importance of voter participation.
In her endorsement, Swift described Harris as “a gifted leader” and praised her selection of Tim Walz as running mate, stating that he has been “a champion for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and women’s right to their bodies.”
She concluded by urging first-time voters to register, emphasizing the significance of their involvement in the election. Musk’s tweet, which gathered 50,000 likes and nearly 10,000 replies, continued to fuel debate online, with reactions ranging from amusement to disgust.
Despite the uproar, neither Swift nor her boyfriend, NFL star Travis Kelce, has responded to Musk’s bizarre comment.
