Cyrus filed for divorce from Firerose in May following seven months of marriage. Billy Ray Cyrus and Firerose have settled their divorce after seven months of marriage
In a statement, Cyrus says he is “very relieved” to put the relationship behind him
A source close to Firerose alleges she walked away without any settlement
Billy Ray Cyrus and Firerose have settled their divorce, PEOPLE confirms.
The resolution comes following seven months of marriage and nearly three months after Cyrus, 62, subsequently filed for divorce from Firerose (previously known as Johanna Hodges), 36, citing irreconcilable differences and inappropriate marital conduct, according to documents obtained by PEOPLE.
At the time of filing, the musician/actor also requested an annulment on the grounds of fraud.
In a statement shared with PEOPLE on Monday, Aug. 5, Cyrus’ attorneys said the former couple had reached a settlement agreement on Friday, Aug. 2.
“This past Friday the parties reached a settlement agreement at mediation to dissolve their 7-month marriage, and the Court declared the parties divorced this morning,” said Rose Palermo and Jason Talley of Cheatham Palermo & Garrett. “Mr. Cyrus is relieved to put this nightmare behind him.”
They noted that “a couple of weeks ago, prior to mediation, Ms. Hodges legally changed her last name from ‘Hodges’ to ‘Cyrus,'” which Cyrus believes “validates his assertion that his ex-wife’s sole impetus for marrying him was to obtain his last name.”
In a statement shared with PEOPLE, the “Achy Breaky Heart” singer said he was “very relieved” by the outcome of the proceedings. “Giving thanks today to breathe a sigh of relief,” wrote Cyrus. He added that “it’s unfortunate” that their relationship “played out this way.”
“…It was a matter of the heart,” Cyrus concluded. “Love is blind … that’s for sure. B. R. C.” A source close to Firerose claims she filed her last name change shortly after they wed. “This was not something she just did last week, especially following the ongoing smear campaign by his team,” they told PEOPLE.
The insider also added that Firerose chose to “walk away without fighting for money in order to be done with the volatile relationship and anything having to do with Billy.” The source also claims that Cyrus and his team “had included a clause asking Firerose to admit she was lying about BRCA” in the settlement, which was “easily thrown out” when she showed her test results and medical records “to prove otherwise.” (Cyrus had previously claimed that his ex had known about being a carrier for the BRCA1 gene mutation for four years, meaning she has an increased likelihood of developing breast cancer, but was unaware of her condition until after their marriage. Firerose claimed that Cyrus filed for divorce in May just one day prior to when she was set to undergo a preventative double mastectomy.)
“If this went to trial, Firerose and her team would have provided a significant amount of evidence to prove he fabricated a narrative that would benefit his public image,” they said. “There is no doubt she would have been awarded the divorce, but it was much more important to her that this continuous smear campaign end.”
