All about the ‘extremely rare’ black diamond engagement ring former Taylor Swift beau Matty Healy gave fiancée Gabbriette Bechtel
Matty Healy couldn’t be more in love.
The 1975 frontman, 35, proposed to his girlfriend, model Gabbriette Bechtel, with an engagement ring that’s just as unique as they are.
Bechtel, 26, debuted the darkly dramatic sparkler — which features a large black diamond at its center, surrounded by a halo of pavé sontes — on her left hand in photos posted to her social media during a Charli XCX concert on Tuesday.
“Marrying the 1975 is very brat @trumanblack,” she captioned a pic showing off the gothic bling, with the star matching the vibe in a black tube top, matching choker and dark makeup and nail polish.
Healy’s mom confirmed that her son is a groom-to-be, saying she’s “thrilled” about the news and that Taylor Swift’s ex-boyfriend had a black diamond ring “made” for Bechtel.
Ajay Anand, CEO of Rare Carat, tells Page Six Style Healy appears to have opted for a rose-cut stone that could be as large as 9 carats.
“Black diamonds are a cool, avant-garde take on the traditional engagement ring. Famous black diamonds include the Spirit of de Grisogono, the Black Star of Africa, and, of course, the Black Orlov,” Anand says.
Steven Stone Managing Director Zack Stone clocks the center stone as a cushion cut, estimating its size at about 5 carats.
“Black diamonds symbolize power, elegance, mystery and strength,” Stone tell us. “Their popularity in engagement rings appears to have risen since Big gave Carrie a 5-carat black diamond engagement ring in the 2010 movie ‘Sex and the City 2’. Celebrities including Carmen Electra and Kat Von D have also showcased black diamond engagement rings.”
“Despite their rarity, black diamonds are not excessively valuable,” he adds, estimating the value of the ring at around $15,000.
However, the value of this particular rock could extend beyond dollar signs.
“Both Matty and Gabbriette have very distinct and non-traditional personal styles; this black diamond engagement ring fits in with that,” Simon G. Jewelry CEO Zaven Ghanimian tells us, emphasizing that natural black diamonds are “extremely rare” and “hard to come by.”
